A nutritionist has claimed the festive drinks sold at coffee chains over the Christmas period should not be regarded as “drinks” but as food, since they contain so many calories. These hot drinks also contain just as much sugar – or more – than food items sold at fast-food restaurants.
Nutritionist Amanda Ursell spoke to The Sun about the festive drinks and why people should be wary before drinking many of them.
She said: “These should not be regarded as drinks — we should see them as a pudding because of the amount of sugar and calories in them.
“They are a very occasional treat, not something you have every day.”
Multiple coffee chains from Caffe Nero to Starbucks have just unveiled their Christmas drinks menu, and the number of calories and sugars in the new items is shocking.
Caffe Nero’s Mint Choc Chip Hot Chocolate has a huge 63g of sugar and 414 calories in each 473ml serving.
That’s the same as 15 teaspoons of sugar and the equivalent of more than seven McDonald’s doughnuts.
Each McDonald’s doughnut contains around 8g of sugar.
The drink, therefore, contains more than double the daily sugar allowance recommended for adults in the UK, who are advised to eat no more than a total of 30g of sugar a day.

Children aged seven to 10 should have no more than 24g of sugar daily.
Costa, who began selling new festive items last week, also has drinks containing hundreds of calories on offer.
The chain’s Terry’s Chocolate Orange Winter Warmer has 45g of sugar per 340ml medium cup and contains 379 calories.
This is equivalent to 10.7 teaspoons of sugar.
As for Gregg’s, its Large Mint Hot Chocolate contains 43g of sugar and 350 calories per 479ml cup.
This is equivalent to 10.3 teaspoons of sugar.
Meanwhile, Pret A Manger’s 360ml regular hot chocolate drink has 35g of sugar and 256 calories.
Starbucks has a Toffee Nut Latte and an Eggnog Latte, both of which contain 32g of sugar.
The coffee chain’s Fudge Brownie Hot Chocolate contains 41g of sugar and 364 calories per 354ml drink.
Chair of the National Obesity Forum, Tam Fry, has previously warned that Britons must be careful when purchasing these drinks over the festive period.
He said: “Christmas is a treats time, so one can be forgiving for any outlet which complements the season by offering something above the ordinary.
“But the levels of fat and sugar are absolutely outrageous. The sugar side of it appalls me most.”
Mr Fry added: “The companies should be much more responsible.
“People will say I’m a spoilsport, but there has to be moderation even at a time like Christmas.”
