Yoghurt is a healthy breakfast, snack, or dessert. Whether you add fruit, nuts, granola, or just eat it alone, yoghurt is great for the digestive system and the immune system. The only problem is, it goes bad quickly. With England about to go into lockdown, we’ll all need to pop to the shops less often. So can you freeze yoghurt?

Freezing yoghurt is perfect for those who can’t get out to the shops often but eat yoghurt nearly every day for breakfast.

You can only really freeze thick and creamy full-fat yoghurts.

Thin yoghurts will separate, become watery and may even taste acidic.

Freezing yoghurt is also a great idea if you use yoghurts for smoothies or baking.

You can fill up an ice cube tray with yoghurt and freeze it.

Then, place the ice cubes straight into the blender or leave to thaw in the fridge to add to your recipe.

Unfortunately, freezing yoghurt doesn’t leave you with the frozen yoghurt we all know and love.

Frozen yoghurt is frozen in a way that ensures the water doesn’t crystallize, and that’s tough to do at home.

How do you freeze yoghurt?

Yoghurt is partly liquid, so will expand when you freeze it.

This means you have to only fill your freezer bags or container halfway with yoghurt.

Otherwise, the yoghurt will expand too far and the seal will break.

You can freeze yoghurt in its original container, as long as you take some of it out first.

Alternatively, try freezing thicker yoghurt in scoops.

This trick will work with the greek natural yoghurts better than it will with runny yoghurt or vegan yoghurts. 

Dollop the scoops neatly on a lined tray and freeze them until firm.

Then package the scoops into ziplock bags or airtight containers. 

How long can you leave yoghurt in the freezer?

As long as you freeze the yoghurt at 0 degrees fahrenheit, you can freeze your yoghurt for as long as you like.

However, you may want to get a move on because yoghurt will lose its taste or texture.

Because it’s liquid, it may start to take on the flavours of other things in the freezer after a while.

Try to defrost and the yoghurt within six to eight weeks of freezing it. 

How to defrost yoghurt

When you want to eat the frozen yoghurt, you’ll need to defrost it first. 

Leave the yoghurt in the fridge for at least 24 hours to let it thaw. 

The yoghurt may be a little watery or even grainy, but that is normal

Keep mixing it to get rid of it, and then feel free to use your yoghurt however you like.
