Chef shares ‘easiest way’ to peel garlic using ‘quick’ soaking method

Garlic is a must-have ingredient for home cooking, offering both a strong flavour and several health benefits. While fresh cloves are easy to use in most meals, peeling them isn’t always as simple – especially when the recipe requires a handful or more. A restaurant chef has shared her “quick and easy” tip to peel large quantities of garlic cloves at once. And it’s as simple as soaking them in water.

How to peel garlic quickly

In a recent video on the Prashad Indian Veggie Cuisine Instagram profile (@prashad_veggie), chef Minal Patel shared the time-saving hack.

She explained that they go through a lot of garlic in the Yorkshire-based restaurant, so “easy peeling” is essential.

Minal said: “This is my kitchen tip. The easiest way to peel garlic is to put it in warm water.

“Soak it for 10-15 minutes and then you can peel it.”

The award-winning restaurant chef demonstrated the hack by placing around 30 garlic cloves straight into a stainless steel bowl.

You should fill the bowl to the top to speed up the process, though you can use less depending on the volume of cloves you have to peel.

After soaking, the chef used a small, sharp knife to remove the skin from each one.

She said: “It’s quick and easy, and you can keep them in your fridge for three or four days afterwards.”

The hack is easy to do as and when you need to or at the start of the week.

Soak one to three bulbs worth of garlic cloves and leave them in the fridge to store for the coming days.

Always keep the peeled cloves in an airtight container to keep them fresher for longer.

According to celebrity chef and presenter Chrissy Teigen, you can simplify chef Minal’s simple kitchen tip even further by trying it with a whole bulb.

In a video posted on her company’s TikTok account (@cravingsbychrissyteigen), she placed a whole garlic clove, unpeeled and untrimmed, into a microwave-safe bowl.

Chrissy then filled it halfway with water and microwaved it for 30 seconds.

After this, she removed the bulb and patted it dry before chopping off the root end of the head.

Now soft and easy to peel, the celebrity chef gently squeezed the unpeeled bulb to pop out the cloves.

One of the best things about this soaking method is that it avoids the “sticky, garlic paper mess” that comes with peeling cloves entirely by hand.

It is also perfect for garlic-rich recipes, such as Nigella Lawson’s 40 garlic clove chicken, and of course, Christmas roast potatoes.

You can purchase three fresh garlic bulbs for as little as 65p in Asda stores, which will last for a few months as long as they are left unpeeled.

This is much cheaper than buying ground garlic granules, and the flavour is guaranteed to be better too.
