Supermarkets everywhere are filled with cakes galore but there’s something so fun about making them at home.
BBC Good Food’s coffee and walnut cake is a real crowd-pleasing dessert, perfect for when you’re hosting guests over the weekend.
Baking can be complex at times, but this recipe takes a grand total of 25 minutes to make from start to finish.
BBC Good Food describes the recipe as “easy”, taking 15 minutes to prep and another 10 minutes to cook, so it won’t have budding bakers holed up in the kitchen for hours.
With just three simple steps, this one’s definitely something to get youngsters involved in making.

The food media platform stated: “Good Food reader Catherine Dunkley shares her super-quick and easy recipe for the perfect last-minute coffee and walnut cake.”
The recipe is great served with a cup of tea or coffee for afternoon tea, but also makes a rather delectable dessert.
BBC Good Food readers were big fans of the sweet concoction. Wowser stated: “This is a really quick and easy cake compared to the one I make. I will definitely be making it again. It says four portions but they are huge portions! It’s delicious, we all enjoyed this cake.”

Ingredients
85g very soft butter
85g golden caster sugar
Two eggs, beaten
85g self-raising flour
Two tsp instant coffee powder
Small handful of walnut pieces (optional)
For the buttercream
One tsp instant coffee powder
One tsp milk
25g very soft butter
100g icing sugar

Method
1. In a medium sized bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs, then the flour and instant coffee. If you’re using walnuts, stir most of them into the batter, putting some aside to few to decorate the cake later. Transfer to a microwave-proof dish and cook on full power for two mins. Turn the power down to medium and cook for another two minutes.
2. Check to see if the cake is cooked. It should be risen and spring back when touched. If the cake needs a little longer, cook on medium for just one minute more at a time, making sure to check after each minute until the cake is cooked. Remove the cake from the microwave and allow it to cool.
3. Meanwhile, make the yummy coffee butter cream. Dissolve the coffee in the milk, before adding the butter and icing sugar. Beat until smooth and spread it evenly over the cake. For decoration, add the remaining walnuts.
