Alongside drive-ins and dives, diners are a sort of classic and quintessentially American eating establishment. Even as the world changes around us, the diner is a source of familiar culinary comfort mixed with just the right amount of local flavor.
But with COVID-19 threatening the existence of millions of small businesses and local restaurants, diners across America are struggling to survive. Thankfully, Heinz, the people responsible for those slow-pouring glass ketchup bottles found in diners across the country, are stepping up to provide a little bit of financial relief for diners around the country.
Recently, the ketchup brand launched the Heinz For Diners program, which will see them give out $1 million in grants. Fans can nominate their favorite local spot through the contest’s website, and 500 lucky diners across the country will each get a $2000 no-strings-attached grant that can hopefully help them stay afloat until their stools and booths are safe places to eat once again.

On its FAQ page, the promotion lists three specific criteria as to what qualifies as a diner. First, it must be an independently-owned establishment with no more than two locations (so hopefully Shake Shack and Ruth’s Chris don’t try to weasel their way into getting this money). It also needs to be legally operating, with all of the necessary documentation in place in order to serve food. Finally, it needs to provide a W-9 form (basically a taxpayer identification document that verifies basic info about an individual or business) in order to get the funding.
Anyways, you can nominate your neighborhood diner online between now and May 31. In addition to ordering takeout from them, it’s a great way to make sure you can return to your favorite spot once this is all over. May the best diners win.
