As I write this post, it is 98 degrees where I live in upstate New York (although my phone tells me it feels like 102!). And I do not have air conditioning. So it is hot, hot, hot — which means I’m looking for all sorts of ways to stay cool this summer. While I’m drinking plenty of water, I’m also treating myself to my fair share of wine slushies. Because I’m a grown-up and I can!
In the past, I’ve made wine slushies the most basic way — which is to pour the wine into a 9×13-inch pan and freeze it for at least six hours before using a fork to scrape it up, granita-style. This method is fine, but sometimes, the sound of the fork running along the icy chunks reminds me of nails on a chalkboard. So when I saw this new gizmo from Rabbit at a press preview last March, I knew it was something I had to have.
Sure enough, I am INTO IT.

It comes with a recipe book to make all sorts of boozy slushies, but I figure there’s no point in gilding the lily (or exerting any extra energy if I don’t have to). So I like to keep things simple: Last night, I emptied a bottle of cheap-ish rosé into the silicone container. Then, I put the stirrer in, added the lid, and popped it into my freezer.
In the morning, I put the cute neoprene sleeve onto the container and used my hands to mash everything up. The sleeve kept my fingers from freezing off and I found the process to be very stress ball-esque, only you get de-stressed AND a cool treat when you’re done.
The result is a very ice-shard-y pitcher of rosé. I’ve found that adding a splash of chilled wine (or some seltzer or just letting it melt a little) makes it more drinkable, but I’m not gonna lie, I’ve also totally used a spoon to eat this stuff as is. Is this tool totally necessary? No. (As I said, you can just freeze wine in a baking pan.) But it’s fun to play with and makes it incredibly easy to make a wine slushie.
Maybe when this heatwave is over I’ll experiment with some of the recommended recipes. Now if you’ll excuse me, my laptop is getting hot and I can’t stand the thought of the temp rising even one single degree.
