Trader Joe’s Egg White Salad & Old Fashioned Potato Salad Recalled for Listeria Risk

Trader Joes

Trader Joe's is recalling two egg products, Egg White Salad and Old Fashioned Potato Salad, for potential listeria contamination. The recall is related to a larger recall from Almark Foods of hard-cooked egg products, issued in response to a food safety alert from the CDC on December 18, that found these products were likely associated with a Listeria outbreak. At the time of publication, there had been seven reported cases—including one death and four hospitalizations.

Almark Foods is voluntarily recalling all of its Hard-Cooked and Peeled Egg Pails that were distributed to food service companies across 11 states: GA, CA, MS, NC, PA, TN, IA, MO, AL, FL and AZ. While no direct-to-consumer products are being recalled by Almark Foods themselves, we anticipate grocers and other food retailers to issue their own recalls for various products items that utilized these products.

So far, we know Trader Joe’s is recalling its Egg White Salad with Chives and Old Fashioned Potato Salad with use by dates up to and including 12/27/2019 in relation to this larger recall. These products were sold in AL, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT and WI stores. All products have been removed from store shelves and are available to be returned for a full refund. No related illnesses have been reported to date.

Foods contaminated with Listeria often do not smell or look spoiled, but can still lead to life-threatening infections and serious symptoms including nausea, vomiting, fever, muscle aches, neck stiffness and severe headaches. Anyone who is experiencing these symptoms should contact a healthcare professional immediately.
