Shortages of Walkers crisps have been reported on shelves across the country, with some major supermarkets also having no produce left to sell on their websites. The news comes amid widespread shortages of other foods caused by global supply chain issues and Brexit, which the crisp industry has so far evaded.
What has caused the shortage?
A spokesperson for Walkers said: “A recent IT system upgrade has disrupted the supply of some of our products.
“Our sites are still making crisps and snacks but at a reduced scale.
“We’re doing everything we can to increase production and get people’s favourites back on shelves.”
Walkers owner PepsiCo had completed a £14 million upgrade of its Southern Region Distribution Centre in Beaumont Leys, Leicester – its largest UK distribution site.
The change is one of the biggest investments it has made in the UK.
A new building, it said, with “state-of-the-art equipment and technology” would increase storage capacity at the warehouse site by 29 percent.
The company said the investment would allow its crisps – which are among the most popular in the UK – to be distributed to supermarkets and retail partners more efficiently.
Walkers said: “As part of the new building, the latest automated technology has been installed to retrieve and move pallets of stock more efficiently.”
However, it appears this hasn’t been the case, as websites such as Tesco show many Walkers brands are completely sold out.
The supplier has also reportedly asked supermarkets to remove deals on the crisps for the time being.

Which crisps are affected?
It is believed that many Walkers branded crisps are in short supply at the moment.
The Leicester-based manufacturer confirmed products such as multipacks of ready salted crisps, Quavers and Wotsits had been affected by a recent IT upgrade.
However, Walkers has said it will ramp up production of its most popular products.
Crisps made by walkers include:
- French Fries
- Monster Munch
- Salt & Shake
- Walkers Classics, including ready salted, salt & vinegar and cheese and onion
- Walkers Crinkles
- Walkers Oven Baked
- Walkers Ridged crisps
