It has been rumoured Adele followed the Sirtfood diet. The actress recently told Vogue she cut out caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, and all “spicy, citrusy, and tangy” foods.

Speaking about her weight loss, which generated countless headlines and speculation about how the singer lost weight, she told the magazine it was the result of a dedicated exercise plan to improve her mental health.

She told Vogue: “It was because of my anxiety.

“Working out, I would just feel better.

“It was never about losing weight, it was always about becoming stronger and giving myself as much time every day without my phone. I got quite addicted to it.”

The singer worked out threes times a day, she told the magazine, enjoying hikes, boxing, cardio and weight lifting sessions.

No doubt many dieters will be inspired by Adele’s weight loss. What can an expert tell us about the diet plan so widely attributed to Adele’s weight change?

He said: “The top ‘sirt’ foods lean towards real healthy foods such as kale, strawberries, buckwheat, turmeric and coffee – which is good.

“However, they also include foods that you wouldn’t always consider a ‘diet’ food, such as red wine and dark chocolate, which may be an excellent advantage for those looking to find balance in their nutrition.”

Although traditionally the diet does focus on how much, not just what, you eat.

“A possible disadvantage is that these foods are partnered with a hefty calorie restriction, which doesn’t exceptionally provide a feeling of balance if you’re starving and in restriction.

“It’s important also to note that it’s tough to specify whether fast weight loss occurs due to the types of foods or simply the extreme calorie deficit.”

Losing weight quickly comes with a number of health risks, the expert pointed out.

It’s important to lose weight in a sustainable manner and speak to your GP before making drastic changes to your diet.

Alex said: “If someone is looking for fast weight loss then sure, there are ways like this to achieve it, however, there could be many downsides.

“Losing weight that fast, and eating in such a restricted diet makes it very difficult to maintain muscle.

“Which really should be the goal of any diet, because muscle is so metabolically active, therefore you’d want to keep your muscle in order to have a higher metabolic rate. Let alone looking better and being stronger

“Another downside is that the chances of stopping the diet and going back to your old habits and gaining weight could be highly likely.

“If a diet isn’t sustainable then, the after diet care is very important to make sure your new mindset and habits align with maintaining your weight in a healthy way.

Once someone has lost weight, how can they keep it off?

Alex said: “The best way to maintain your weight loss is to make sure you adopt healthy habits in your balanced nutrition plan.

“Make sure you’re not in a restricted calorie deficit so that you can be fuelled by food to be active, build muscle and be healthy in body and mind.”
