Kirstie Allsopp is best known for presenting Location, Location, Location on Channel 4. Before her 50th birthday, she decided to overhaul her diet and exercise regime in a bid to reduce possible health risks associated with being overweight.
Kirstie, who has “being overweight obviously is a matter of personal choice”, turned to nutritional therapist Amelia Freer to help her lose weight. The healthy eating expert, who has previously coached Sam Smith and James Corden, advised her to go on the “metabolic balance” diet.
The diet was personalised to Kirstie and saw her cut out bread, potatoes, aubergines and wine. She had to eat three meals a day, five hours apart.
Throughout the programme, Kirstie lost more than two stone and went from a UK size 16 to a size 12.
Kirstie said it wasn’t a “complicated” diet to follow. “The first bite should always be protein. Eat greens and proteins and keep carbs to a minimum,” she added.
The foods she cut out were because they “didn’t suit” her. She “doesn’t eat them [potatoes] anymore, and aubergines don’t agree with me”. Kirstie added: “Wine doesn’t agree with me so now I drink vodka martinis.”
Instead, she “eats more greens” and will “order two salads” when eating out. Kirstie also confessed to not “being a pasta person for a while”.
The presenter spoke about having to change the way she views certain foods: “It’s viewing vegetables as carbs. It’s always the beans, the broccoli – there’s no need for potatoes.”
She also eats less sugar and said: “That’s the most extraordinary thing when you reduce your sugar, it’s weird, it doesn’t feel as if you’re depriving yourself when you think it isn’t part of your life.”
Amelia Freer’s healthy eating plan:
Fluids – Water should be the majority of what you drink each day, if you don’t enjoy plain water, the nutritionist suggests adding cucumber or lemon. Herbal teas are a great alternative. Tea and coffee should be drunk in moderation – no more than one or two cups of coffee, and three or four cups of tea a day.
Vegetables – Six portions of vegetables will form the foundation of meals, they are filling and provide lots of vitamins, fibre, minerals and nutrients.
Fruit – Three portions of fruit in addition to six portions of vegetables should be consumed every day. If you aren’t hitting the recommended amount, increase your intake by one portion every day.
Protein – Three portions of protein every day, but more than just meat or fish. Amelia recommends yoghurt, tofu, chickpeas and eggs, sausages and processed meats should be avoided.
Carbs – Fruit and vegetables contain carbohydrates, as well as beans and pulses.
Fats – Good fats will give your body the nutrients it needs. Amelia suggests a quarter of medium avocado or a tablespoon of nut butter.
Nuts – Aim for a handful of unsalted nuts or seeds – almonds, cashews, peanuts or pecans, chia, pumpkin, poppy and sesame are good options.
Dropping two dress sizes meant some of her clothes no longer fit her, but most of Kirsty’s clothes are handmade.
So instead of buying new clothes, Kirstie had her items altered. “I design a lot of my own stuff. As it had been made in the first place it could be altered. I had lots of stuff taken in,” she told the Daily Mail.
Being smaller also meant Kirstie was able to “revisit some of her favourites” that she hadn’t worn in a while.
As for why Kirstie wanted to lose weight, she wanted to reduce the risk of breast cancer. She commended the NHS and explained how she “truly respects” the service it provides, but similarly to smoking, drinking alcohol, “driving too fast and all the things that are bad” we have choices to make.
She acknowledged there are some conditions that can make losing weight harder, but added they were “very few and far between” and most of us can lose weight “if we want”.
