There are many snacks and meals which are allegedly healthy but actually contain lots of hidden saturated fats and sugars, leading to surprising weight gain.
For example, you may feel like the epitome of health ordering a yoghurt parfait for breakfast, complete with berries, granola and honey.
However, this could be laden with sugars you would not expect from something branded as nutritious.
McKel Kooienga, founder of Nutrition Stripped, stated: “When you’re at a cafe, yoghurt parfaits might seem like the healthiest choice among the donuts and pastries.
“But most parfaits contain sweetened fruit (i.e fruit with a simple syrup) and top it with granola which is typically high in sugar and honey. The sugar quickly adds up.”
In addition to being full of sugar, the expert suggested that a yoghurt parfait is not even a filling food option.
Indeed, according to McKel, it would be no surprise if someone’s “stomach may be grumbling an hour later” after choosing this for breakfast.
This is because the spike in glucose inevitably leads to a sugar crash, prompting a feeling of lethargy and craving for more sugar.
Sugary yoghurt parfaits are unlikely to keep a person full until lunchtime, causing them to snack throughout the day and consuming unnecessary calories.

But that doesn’t mean slimmers must ditch their yoghurt and granola in order to lose weight.
Instead of processed parfaits, the dietitian advised slimmers to opt for unsweetened full-fat yoghurts or almond yoghurt.
This can be topped with fresh fruit and just a sprinkle of homemade granola.
In a similar vein, granola bars can seem healthy at first glance but are often laden with sugar.

Speaking about the snack, McKel stated: “They have chunks of fruit, nuts, rolled oats and maybe even some dark chocolate. What’s not to love, right?
“But when you flip their labels over to read the ingredient list, you quickly realise many of them contain high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils.”
According to the expert, high-fructose corn syrup, like all added sugars, may contribute to weight gain, type two diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and heart disease if eaten daily.
The safest option for a granola bar is one with a very simple list of ingredients, with the expert giving examples of unsweetened dried fruit, eggs, whole nuts, dates, whole seeds and coconut oil.
