The keto diet aims to force the body into using a different type of fuel. Instead of relying on sugar that comes from carbohydrates, it uses ketone bodies, a type of fuel that the liver produces from stored fat.
The plan is one of the most popular diets on the market and has been associated with weight loss for several years.
Although keto meals can be straightforward, such as meat, snacking on the diet can be difficult.
While many may opt for fruit as a healthy snack, lots of fruits actually contain high levels of carbs, making them unsuitable for those on the plan.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, nutritionist Rob Hobson on behalf of SlimFast Keto, shared some keto friendly and healthy snacks.
He explained that nuts and seeds make the perfect snack.
Rob said: “These foods make great keto snacks or additions to dishes such as curries, salads, yoghurt pots or porridge.
“Nuts and seeds are expensive but there are cheaper ways of purchasing them.
“Rather than buying specific varieties of nuts and seeds, look for mixed packs as these are always cheaper.

“You can also keep an eye on stores such as Holland and Barrett or online (amazon) as there are always deals on offer as long as you’re not fussy which variety of nut is on offer.”
As well as nuts, avocados make a great breakfast or snack for those on the keto diet due to their high fat content.
The expert added: “The tasty fruits are considered to be really pricy but there are ways to find them very reasonably priced on a budget.
“If you are lucky enough to have a local fruit and veg market nearby then often you can find avocados that are slightly past their best in baskets for as little as a few quid.
“You can cut the flesh into chunks then cover in lemon juice and place in Ziplock bags to freeze – this is great for use in Keto breakfast smoothies.
“Supermarkets such as Morrison’s sell ‘wonky’ fruits and vegetables such as avocados (these are the less perfect looking poor souls!) which you can buy a bag of for the same cost as a perfect looking one.”
For those on the go or at work, a pre-packed snack might be the best option.
Rob said: “You can also get some reasonably priced pre-packed Keto snacks these days such as the new SlimFast Keto Nut Butter Cups which contain dark chocolate and peanuts and are a convenient option to keep in your handbag for those moments when you find yourself caught short between mealtimes.
“It’s a great option if you’re ever looking for a little sweet treat without going off plan.”
Other snacks that are keto friendly include halloumi cheese slices, a keto smoothie, coconut milk yoghurt topped with berries as well as a homemade guacamole dip with carrots, red peppers and raw cauliflower florets.
The nutritionist also recommended eating boiled eggs, seasoned with paprika or celery salt for extra taste.
One large egg contains less than one gram of carbs and about six grams of protein, making them an ideal food for a ketogenic lifestyle.
They are also super versatile and can be consumed in a variety of ways although boiled is perhaps one of the best ways for those on the go.
