If getting rid of belly fat fast is occupying your mind, you may turn to diet plans or exercise routines. But while moving more and getting a balanced, healthy diet is crucial, it may be that there are some words of advice which could be of benefit. Express.co.uk sought the expertise of dietitian, Dr Carrie Ruxton. The nutrition expert explained that it’s not possible to target fat loss specifically in the abdominal area.

Dr Carrie told Express.co.uk: “Despite marketing hype, no one food or diet specifically targets belly fat.
“However, certain diets and types of exercise can reduce waist circumference, overall body fat and boost muscles, making people feel and look better.”
Dr Carrie went on to detail what foods to avoid if you want to slim.
In fact, that’s drinks and snacks which are packed with sugar – news which may not come as a surprise to some.
Instead, dieters could replace sugar they add to foods with sweeteners, as well as focusing on healthier snacks.
“A key action is cutting down on sugary drinks and snacks since excess calories from sugar boost insulin release which promotes body fat storage, especially around the waist,” she explained.
“Swapping to low calorie sweeteners, such as Hermesetas, in tea, coffee and homemade desserts, as well as snacking on fruit and vegetables, instead of high calorie treats, certainly helps.”
At the same time, Dr Carrie advised combining this healthier diet with exercise.
“In addition, try a few sessions per week of high intensity exercise involving the whole body to target body fat, including burpies, running, weight lifting or spinning.”
Another way to get rid of excess fat may be cutting down on the consumption of one particular drink.
Alcohol often contains a huge amount of sugar.
The research titled “Is alcohol consumption a risk factor for weight gain and obesity?” explores whether excess calories for alcohol are partly stored as belly fat.
Another study – “Alcohol drinking patterns differentially affect central adiposity as measured by abdominal height in women and men” – saw participants who were daily drinkers but drinking less than one alcoholic beverage per day tended to have the least abdominal fat.
This was in comparison to people in the study who drank less often, but consumed more on the days that they did, were the most likely to have excess belly fat.
Another piece of advice is to ensure that protein takes priority when it comes to figuring out your daily diet.
