Losing weight is a difficult process, and it is easy to just give up when you don’t see instant results. Food is a huge part of life and it’s normal to indulge in a big slab of chocolate on the weekend. Persistently overeating is the problem, and doing this for years on end contributes towards obesity. Wouldn’t it be great if someone could hypnotise you to break these habits?
Does hypnosis for weight loss work?
The Hypnotherapy Directory is a service that helps to match individuals up with qualified hypnotherapist, including those that hypnotise people with the aim of weight loss.
The site explains: “Hypnosis for weight loss can be an effective method in challenging these mindsets and moments of temptation, helping you to live a healthier life.”
A hypnotherapist will target your unconscious mind with “powerful suggestion techniques” in order to help you “develop a positive relationship with food and exercise.”
The idea sounds promising, since healthy eating and staying active are the two main components of long-term weight management. But does it actually work?

What happens during a hypnotherapy session?
According to the Hypnotherapy Directory, the session starts with your hypnotherapist guiding you into a state of deep relaxation.
They will then access your unconscious mind and use soothing scripts to help you explore why you overeat.
The hypnotherapist will “suggest new ways of thinking through visualisations”.
For example, they might encourage you to envision the body you want, imagine how confident you will feel, or see how much you will improve.
Hypnosis doesn’t suddenly cause you to lose a stone, but can encourage healthy lifestyle choices.
The site explains: “These techniques are designed to empower you so that you can take control of your choices.
“Through weight loss hypnosis, you can learn to enjoy the taste of healthy food and stop craving sugary, fatty foods.
“You should also learn to enjoy your body and not see it as a source of anxiety.
“By tackling those deep feelings that form the foundations of your eating habits, hypnosis for weight loss can help you adopt a healthier lifestyle and a happier mindset.”

Does hypnosis for weight loss work?
Hypnosis has been shown to work on millions of people across the globe, but what is the evidence?
According to the Mayo Clinic, weight-loss hypnosis may help you shed an extra few pounds alongside a healthy diet, exercise and counselling.
However, there isn’t enough scientific evidence to say it how effective it is.
A few studies have found that hypnotherapy can help you to lose about six pounds over 18 months, but the quality of some of these studies have been questioned, says the site.
There is some evidence to show that people who get hypnotised for weight loss have “lower rates of inflammation, better satiety and better quality of life,” and all of which could influence weight.
The Hypnotherapy Directory site also states that hypnosis “certainly won’t work in the same way for everyone.”
It explains: “An important thing to remember is that hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy, and therefore should be used alongside a healthy eating plan and exercise regime.
“If you want advice about eating better and exercising, you may find it useful to speak to your doctor or a nutrition professional.
“It is often a combined effort of all these things that leads to success.”
