Here's How to Tie-Dye With Red Wine

There are several reasons you may want to try this boozy craft. 

  1. You have leftover red wine. STOP! We know what you’re about to say (“Leftover wine? What’s that?! LOL”) and we’re here to tell you we’ve heard the joke before. And we get it. Wine is for drinking. But what if you left the cork out for too long and now your wine is gross? Or what if you have a bottle that you just don’t like? Or, ya know, what if you think a red wine-dyed shirt would bring you a tiny bit of sunshine during these dark times? All of these are valid reasons to proceed with this project and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. 
  2. You’ve already tried other food-dying methods and you’re ready for a new challenge. And if this is your first foray into the wonderful world of tie-dying with kitchen staples, that’s cool too. 
  3. Your wardrobe is already covered in red wine stains. Drunken spills, but make it fashion. 

In any case, this Tik Tok-born trend is practically begging to be your next DIY project. Here’s how it’s done: 

  1. Grab a white shirt, some rubber bands, and a bottle of red wine you don’t mind wasting. OK, “waste” is a strong word: Time spent crafting is never wasted, and you’ll actually really love the finished product. But maybe don’t shell out the big bucks for this bottle. 
  2. Bunch up the shirt randomly and tightly tie the sections off with rubber bands. Place the shirt in a foil-lined baking dish. 3. Drizzle the wine over the shirt. Use a little or a lot, it’s your shirt. Just don’t soak the thing—if you use too much, the wine may seep underneath the rubber bands and you’ll end up with a solid wine-colored shirt (not that there’s anything wrong with that). 
  3. Let sit for four hours. Don’t be impatient. You want to give the wine ample time to set.
  4. Bake. Set your oven to 170° and bake the shirt, rubber bands and all, in the foil-lined baking dish for about 30 minutes to an hour. If your shirt is still damp after half an hour, continue to bake until it’s dry. 
  5. Rinse. Once the shirt is fully dry, rinse in cold water with a small amount of laundry detergent (just a drop will do). The color will bleed a bit, so don’t freak out if the water turns pink or purple. 
  6. Dry. Throw the shirt in the dryer and you’re done! Enjoy your fancy new wine shirt.
