Spoon Bread, Suppone or Suppawn.

An old Native American recipe. It existed before the first recorded recipe, which was in the early 1700’s.

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  2. 1-1/4 cup buttermilk
  3. 1 cup boiling beef broth
  4. 3 tablespoons melted butter
  5. 1 teaspoon salt
  6. 3 teaspoons honey or maple syrup
  7. 5 large eggs
  8. 1 teaspoons baking powder
  9. As needed butter for eating the bread

Steps

  1. Preheat oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit

  2. Mix the salt, cornmeal, and honey.

  3. Add the boiling water, slowly with the melted butter. Don’t let any lumps set. When blended well let cool about 5-7 minutes.

  4. When cooled add the milk. Wisk till it’s incorporated in.

  5. Beat the eggs, then add them to the cornmeal mixture. Wisk in the baking powder.

  6. Pour mixture into a loaf pan. Bake 35-45 minutes let it set. Get it golden brown.

  7. Spoon it out, serve with butter. I hope you enjoy!!
