In honour of King Charles III’s coronation, Ask Chef Dennis has shared a trifle recipe fit for royalty that you can make at home to share with family and friends to celebrate the occasion.

Ask Chef Dennis, who has been a professional fine dining chef for over 40 years, said: “This dessert features layers of sponge cake, custard, fruit, and whipped cream, adorned with a touch of edible gold leaf for that royal touch.

“Enjoy this delightful dessert as you toast to the new King!” The recipe serves eight to 10 and requires no cooking or baking – so is perfect for all the family to get involved.

1. Prepare the sponge cake or ladyfingers: If using a sponge cake, cut it into one inch cubes. For ladyfingers, simply separate them.

2. Assemble the trifle: In a large trifle bowl or glass serving dish, arrange a layer of sponge cake cubes or ladyfingers at the bottom. Sprinkle half of the sherry or orange juice evenly over the sponge layer.

3. Add a layer of custard: Spoon half of the prepared custard over the sponge layer, making sure to cover the entire surface.

4. Add a layer of fruit: Scatter one cup of mixed berries evenly over the custard layer.

5. Repeat the layers: Place another layer of sponge cake cubes or ladyfingers over the fruit layer, followed by the remaining sherry or orange juice. Spoon the remaining custard over the sponge layer and top with the remaining cup of mixed berries.

6. Prepare the whipped cream: In a large mixing bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whip with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.

7. Decorate the trifle: Spread the whipped cream evenly over the top layer of fruit. Sprinkle the chopped pistachios or almonds on top of the whipped cream.

8. Add the royal touch: If using an edible gold leaf, carefully transfer small pieces onto the whipped cream layer using a soft brush or tweezers for a royal touch.

9. Chill and serve: Refrigerate the trifle for at least two hours to allow the flavours to meld. Serve cold and enjoy the Royal Coronation Trifle as you celebrate the UK King’s Coronation.

Note: Feel free to customize the fruit and nut layers with your favourites, and don’t hesitate to try different types of sponge cake, such as lemon or chocolate, for a unique twist.
